Traffic Deaths by Municipality in Japan (2000)
9,066 persons died as a result of traffic accidents in Japan in the year 2000, the fifth consecutive year that this figure has remained under 10,000. The situation remains serious, as both the number of accidents and those injured has increased significantly over the previous year, breaking past records.
Since 1995, Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis has carried out comparisons of the number of deaths per 10,000 people in municipalities throughout Japan. This data is used in the traffic safety activities conducted by local governments, organizations, and groups all over the nation. Fatalities (died within 24 hours as are result of accident) shown in tables are divided into accidents that occurred on surface roads and those that occurred on expressways. Fatalities per 10,000 people has been calculated using the number of traffic deaths on surface roads as a base, and have been listed in order from the highest number.
