2.Car Safety Viewed from Macrostatistics
Here, we took up the "number of driver fatalities per 100,000 cars" as an indicator of car safety. The number signifies how many drivers were killed in traffic accidents per 100,000 passenger cars in Japan. A fatality here means a victim who died within 24 hours of an accident.

Analysis was conducted on both ordinary-size passenger cars and light passenger cars. All types of car accidents, including frontal collision, were included. The analysis covers the 5-year period from 2000 to 2004.
  2-1 Ordinary-Size Passenger Cars

Figure 5 indicates driver fatalities per 100,000 ordinary-size passenger cars. In each year, the later the year of the vehicles' first registration, the fewer driver deaths tended to occur. The statistics on the number of cars are from the "Number of Automobiles by Year of First Registration" by the Automobile Inspection & Registration Association.

  2-2 Light Passenger Cars

Figure 6 indicates the number of driver fatalities per 100,000 light passenger vehicles. In each year, the later the year of the vehicles' first registration, the fewer driver deaths tended to occur. The statistics on the number of cars are from the data of the Japan Mini Vehicles Association.
