1 Trends in Fatalities from Thrown from the Vehicle Accidents
Graphs (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2) were made comparing the figures for fatalities from "thrown from the vehicle accidents" with the overall number of accident fatalities from people riding in passenger vehicles and trucks. The figures shown are based on annual statistics for the period from 1993 to 2003. As the graphs indicate, the number of fatalities is decreasing year by year.

A close look at the statistics for fatalities from "thrown from the vehicle accidents" according to seating position in the vehicle reveals that, while fatalities for the driver position and front passenger position are definitely declining, fatalities for passengers in the rear seat positions are declining much more slowly (see Fig. 3).

Fig. 4 shows a graph comparing the fatalities from "thrown from the vehicle accidents" and the "total number of accident fatalities while riding in vehicles" according to passenger seating position.

The results showed that fatalities for passengers sitting in rear seating positions came to 10 percent of the "total number of accident fatalities while riding in vehicles." In contrast, fatalities for passengers sitting in rear seating positions in "thrown from the vehicle accidents" came to 24 percent. This indicates that the rate of fatalities for "thrown from the vehicle accidents" is 2.5 times that for the "total number of accident fatalities while riding in vehicles" category.
