Section 1 Ratio of Crossing Collisions among All Accidents
Traffic accident statistics show that 233,177 crossing collisions (involving casualties) took place in 2006, representing approximately 26% of all traffic accidents resulting in death or injury. While crossing collisions have declined in number since 2004, they are still the second most frequent accidents, after rear-end collisions. (Figs. 1 and 2)

Crossing collisions that inflicted death and serious injury totaled 17,797 cases, accounting for the largest proportion, 26%, of all serious traffic accidents, even though the number itself has been falling since 2000. (Figs. 3 and 4)

As can be seen, crossing collisions are one of the most dangerous types of accidents, causing more fatalities and serious injuries than any other type.
