Section 1      Trends in participation by transportation mode
  Using the combined age group total, the number of participants by transportation mode is shown in Fig. 1, with participation indexed to 1996 in Fig. 2. Overall, there was a rapid increase in the number of participants up until 2000, leveling off at 1.2 from 2001 onwards. This reflects the growing trend in participating automobile drivers as they represent the majority of involved parties of accidents. In contrast, there is a declining trend in moped users and pedestrian participants. Bicycle riders, however, show a significant increase in participation. In general, participation trends differ according to mode of transportation.
