5. HELMET TIDBIT
1-2. Wearing a crash helmet
The motorcyclist must wear a crash helmet. The rider of large- and regular-size motorcycles must have their passenger wear a crash helmet. Wear an approved helmet with the "PS(C)", "S" or "JIS" (Japan Industrial Standard) mark properly by fastening the chin strap firmly. Helmets intended for construction work are unacceptable.
Does your helmet bear any of the product certification marks shown below? Automotive helmets are designated under the Safety Law for Consumer Life Products as special items Note 2 allowed to bear a mark certifying compliance to a technical standard. The marking qualification is granted to those manufacturers or importers a) who have notified to the Competent Minister and b) who have also met the requirements for compliance.

Note 2: "Special items" are required to meet the Technical Standard for Preventing Fatal or Injury Risks to Consumers.

In accordance with the Road Traffic Law, any person wanting to ride a motorcycle in Japan must wear a helmet bearing a "PS(C)", "S" or "JIS" mark. Helmets bearing a JIS mark is automatically accompanied by one of the two marks, depending on when the new helmet was produced.

The SG (Safety Goods) marking system is voluntarily run by manufacturers under the leadership of the Consumer Product Safety Association. SG marking is granted to products complying to the safety standard established by the Association. If a person is injured or otherwise damaged due to a product bearing an SG mark, the Association provides relief or settles dispute for the person (provided that the product is proved defective and that a causal relationship is found between product defect and human damage).
